When was the last time you took action to take care of your mental health?

The stigma surrounding mental health has slowly dissipated over the past few years.

In fact, the acceleration of mental health stigmas ending might be one of the only positives to come from the pandemic.

From social isolation to being overworked in a blurred work-from-home environment, the pandemic brought mental health into focus more than ever.

However, now that the pandemic is (hopefully) in the rear-view mirror, that doesn’t mean we should stop talking about the impact that deteriorating mental health can have on your everyday life.

On the latest episode of the Wealth Wisdom Podcast, I’m joined by therapist Cecilia Mannella to break down some common refrains about mental health that just aren’t true.

She talks about some things she’s been seeing with clients over the past few years, which includes a heavy dose of overworked, stressed out entrepreneurs.

This is an episode I’ve wanted to record for quite some time, so I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did.

You can listen to the podcast through these popular streaming avenues.

Below is a recap with some of the episode highlights.

Myth #1: Stress doesn’t really affect our everyday lives

We all endure stress for different reasons, although it’s fair to say that most of us saw our stress levels rise during the pandemic.

“Most of us underestimate the stress we’ve been under for the past few years, and we minimize that quite easily,” Cecilia said on the podcast.

In this clip, she talks specifically about facets of your life that are impacted due to stress.

How stress has impacted business owners

This isn’t breaking news, but I can tell you from my experience working with business owners throughout the pandemic, the last couple of years have been a slog.

In this clip, Cecilia talks about how an entrepreneur’s greatest “superpower” has also been their detriment.

Myth #2: It’s easy to find balance

If finding balance were easy, surely we all would have discovered it by now!

In this clip, Cecilia talks about how this idea of easily finding balance, which is often perpetuated by the media, just isn’t true.

Time is our most valuable currency

This is something that business owners know all too well…especially those who had trouble turning off that “off switch” during those work from home days.

As valuable as your time is, you need to make sure it aligns with what energizes you.

Myth #3: Seeking help is a sign of weakness

Based on this entire podcast being about the diminishing stigma surrounding mental health, this myth should be the easiest to dispel.

However, this refrain is something that Cecilia still comes across on a regular basis.

“I hear that quite often that seeking help is a sign of weakness, that somehow we should figure it out by ourselves.”

In the clip below, Cecilia uses one of her favourite metaphors to debunk this myth.

If you’re a business owner, I think the main takeaway from this episode is that you should work at trying to ease unnecessary stress.

One good way to ease unnecessary stress? Make sure you don’t leave a business sale until the last minute.

On the next episode of the Wealth Wisdom Podcast, I’ll be joined by Bob Lawrence, Founder of VEER Business Advisors. Bob focuses on helping business owners enhance the value of their business while preparing them for an exit.

He’ll hit on the five things you need to do before selling your business during the next recording of the Wealth Wisdom Podcast.

If you have any questions for Bob, please let us know.
