Performance coaching is unequivocally on the rise.

If you’re a business owner and you haven’t hired a performance coach, chances are you know someone who has.

According to the International Coaching Federation, the global coaching industry was worth $20 billion in 2022. That’s a steep increase from just a few years ago. Back in 2019, the global coaching industry was worth an estimated $15 billion.

For today’s guest on the Wealth Wisdom Podcast, he’s seen his business shift dramatically over the past five years.

Dr. Kolin Kriitmaa joins the latest episode of the Wealth Wisdom Podcast to talk about what a Performance Coach does, and how his business has transitioned from largely helping athletes, to assisting other professionals such as first responders and business owners.

You can listen to the podcast through your preferred streaming platform.

You can also watch the video podcast in full on YouTube.

Here are the key highlights from the episode.

The Performance Coaching Shift

Although Kolin has been in the industry for 23 years, Kolin has mainly focused on helping athletes reach their peak performance.

However, he’s noticed a shift in his line of working over the past couple of years.

This shift has definitely been helped by the era of Zoom, according to Kolin. While flying all over the place to meet with clients is still a reality for him, he’s also able to meet with more clients via Zoom.

While the virtual shift has been noticeable, what’s been even more prominent is his change of clientele.

Using the Right Tools

How much better would you perform in your day to day life if you had an extra 10% to give?

“With athletes, that’s the difference between winning the Stanley Cup and not winning the Stanley Cup,” Kolin said on the podcast.

So, how can Performance Coaches help you find that extra gear? Kolin uses an analogy to help explain that here.

Kolin’s cheeky analogy arguably undersells just how many “tools” he provides for his clients. Just by peeking at his website, you can see that Kolin helps his clients through nutrition tracking, load management, psychological skills training, and more.

Stress vs. Pressure: What’s the Difference?

For business owners and athletes, Kolin has often found that both of these cohorts have different hurdles to overcome.

For athletes, it’s pressure. For business owners and executives, it’s stress.

Kolin gives his take on why these are the biggest mental hurdles for athletes and business owners to overcome respectively. He also touches on the synergy between performance and well being.

The Power of Three

One of the biggest challenges with being a business owner is that you, more or less, have one million tasks that you need to get done.

Kolin’s solution to that? Focus on the power of three.

I always learn a ton when I have guests on this podcast, and today’s episode was no different with Kolin. Hopefully, you feel the same and a couple of Kolin’s points resonated with you.

On the next episode of the Wealth Wisdom Podcast, I’ll be joined by Kevin McSweeney (SVP, Portfolio Manager and Lead – Canadian Equities at CI Global Asset Management) to talk about what we’ve seen in the markets so far this year but more importantly, what’s to come.
