Canada has a hiring problem.

The statistics back it up, and that’s certainly the sense I get after talking to many local business owners.

For a plethora of reasons (which we get to on this episode), it seems like businesses of all shapes and sizes are struggling to attract and retain quality employees.

So, in order to get some insight on recent hiring problems of Canada, we wanted to get a guest on the podcast who deals with hiring issues on a daily basis.

On the latest episode of the Wealth Wisdom Podcast, I’m joined by Tina Burke, founder of Burke Recruiting in Vancouver.

Tina joins us to talk about why it’s so tough for businesses to find quality employees right now. She also touches on what you can expect if you work with a recruiter (including how they get paid), while also discussing her journey as an entrepreneur.

You can listen to the podcast through these popular outlets.

Or, you can check out the podcast in full colour on YouTube.

Here are some key highlights from the episode.

Why COVID is still hampering the hiring process

We might be past the worst that COVID has to offer, but that doesn’t mean it’s gone for good. Just ask any entrepreneur who’s struggled to find workers.

In terms of finding quality candidates, COVID is still having an undesirable effect.

Tina talks about this, and some of the other main culprits behind mass hiring woes, in this clip below.

Would a recession solve hiring woes?

According to some…yes.

We often tell clients that recessions are a healthy and necessary part of the economic cycle.

That could also be the case for the employment market as well. Tina and I talk about that more in this clip here.

What to expect when working with a recruiter

According to Stats Canada, more than half of all businesses in Canada expected that the recruitment of skilled workers would be an obstacle, as of December 2022.

So, it’s easy to believe that as businesses struggle to find employees, the role of professional recruiters is going to become more important.

So, what can you expect when working with a recruiter? And how do they get paid?

Tina talks more about how she gets paid in this clip below, while also offering insight on what candidates should (and should not) do when it comes to recruiting the help of a recruiter.

Lessons from a successful entrepreneur

Tina created Burke Recruiting 24 years ago. While every entrepreneur goes through their struggles, Tina has certainly had some successes along the way.

One of those successes included being named to Business in Vancouver’s “Top 40 Under 40” list. Congratulations, Tina!

In this clip, Tina touches on two things that have contributed to her success in the business world.
